I dug a trench inside and down one side of my greenhouse about 75 cm deep and wide and 1.5 meters wide. Ive filled it in with dead leaves, garden prunings and spent grain. I brew 20lt batches on a regular basis and keep addig to it. my compost heap is now 75 cm hign and even today in February UK the top of the pile is warm to the touch. I put a plastic tray on top of it and use it like a heated propagator to germinate my seeds, I stack plant pots on top and around it to get them off to a faster start and in general my Greenhouse is a little warmer. Mice were a problem once but we soon fixed that by diggng over the heap every few weeks to mix it all up and make it less paletable I guess. 10 cm into the heap its regularly at 40 plus celcius.
