I've just bought two 25kg sacks of Concerto malt for £21.50 each direct from Mungowells in East Lothian. Not much use unless you are in southern Scotland but you maybe find a maltings closer to home. Mungowells is great with the barley grown in the surrounding fields by Angus and Alison in charge of the malting. Great bread flour too.

It's ok got supplies at cost from local brewery

It’s an industry wide problem iirc, something to do with bad crop yields on wheat in america this year? So barley had a higher sale value as farmers are subbing it for cattle feed. Or something.
Either way it goes up every year! Lol

I prefer to buy from local brewery, decent prices and quality.

In Ireland a local brewer in the south east said that the barley harvest has been poor and its jacked up prices all the way through the channel.

As for the Minch malt, I did notice the price difference when I moved back. Can’t wait to brew with it and put it through its paces

I’m sticking with Minch Hook Head, not going back to Simpson’s MO etc any time soon

The hook head malt seems to add a few points of gravity to your recipes. I set a recipe in beersmith3 1041 but when I swapped out the pale malt for hook head pale malt it jumped to 1044.

I really liked that hook head malt but struggled with stuck mashes from the pre-milled stuff and I don't have a mill.

I checked with the homebrew company and they can't adjust the crush.

Anyone had much experience with rice hulls in a grainfather?

Get a malt mill I think whole grain stays fresher longer anyways. I'm just coming to the end of a 40 quid sack of weyers vienna malt. It was worth doing but next bag will be back to GP I've used Minch in the past and it was fine.

For any brewers in the Edinburgh/East Lothian area I recommend - they don't do delivery, so need to be local enough to collect - they do pale malt and wheat malt.

I still need to get my adjunct malts elsewhere, but as a base malt I highly recommend theirs

Sad fact of life that down south I've asked my two local brewery's to sell me sacks of malt one declined the other didn't answer twice.
